A 4x4 machine drives all four wheels; a 4x2 machine drives one axle. Four-wheel drive helps on soft ground, gravel, slopes and muddy site access, where a 4x2 machine can lose traction.
The trade-off is cost and complexity: more driveline parts to maintain. For road work, yards and firm surfaces a 4x2 machine is often enough; for field access, farms and unpaved sites, 4x4 is the safer choice.
